This is Additive Property of Zero.You are adding zero and nothing changes.
This becomes a very useful tool later on in math. Say you want to "complete the square"; you have to abuse the Additive Property of Zero to do so. By using this Additive Property of Zero with varialbes, you do not change the original exprssion.
