Why must Gregor Samsa die in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka?

This is the scientific definition of metamorphosis: Biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal's body structure through cell growth and differentiation.

As in any process, there is a finite end. In a biological process, that end is death. So, Gregor dies.
