In 1914, Congress passed the Federal Trade Commission Act,

the newly created agency role was to enforce the new rules and statutes and protect consumers from unfair business practices such as false advertising. The new FTC assumed the duties of its almost toothless predecessor known as the federal Bureau of Corporations
