When trying to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word, it is always important to think about what we know of certain things/actions as well as contextual clues. For instance, when we think of someone traveling with an excessive amount of luggage, we often immediately think that he or she with the excessive amount of luggage has probably packed more than just the necessities. In the excerpt, it is stated that the baggage (trumpery) is items that have “accumulated from long housekeeping” and that “he has not the courage to burn.” As such, it can be determined that what “trumpery” means is “useless articles.”
