The reason why children in poorer areas of cities such as Calcutta, Hong Kong, and Rio de Janeiro are smaller than their counterparts in affluent areas of the same cities are heredity and diet. These differences in height are a reflection of heredity ( the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring) and diet (different diet in different area).
