Why did the spanish begin to import african slaves to do the work on the encomiendas and in the mines?

The Spanish conquerors killed several Indians in the war of conquest. They also brought diseases such that by the end of the first century of colonization over 40 million Indians had died. African slaves were the only other option as the sugar plantation and mines needed free labor.
