Unskilled v. skilled labor and extreme tactics v. political tactics: the IWW used extreme tactics such as bombing and riots to bring attention to their cause whereas the AFL used strikes and worked with politicians more to advance unions.

The IWW was responsible for more extreme union tactics. The group had connections to communist ideology and believed in a need for a workers' revolt. They were willing to bring all workers together and use violent tactics to spread their message.
