Why did some southerners feel that industrial growth would benefit the region?

The South was traditionally an agricultural area so they had to work with northern factories and companies in their needs for manufactured goods. They believed that the industrial growth would help them since they would be able to buy their own manufacturing goods instead of getting it form the North since it only made the North stronger.
