Individualism was something that was glorified by the Romantics.
The Romantics valued their freedom so much that they would often write about characters who ran away from their homes, but always longed for it. Their characters (especially Byron's) wanted nothing to do with the society around them, yet never had enough strength to completely break the strings holding them together.
