Racism and competition for jobs: The Chinese Exclusion Act occurred because there were no longer jobs available and the Chinese created competition with whites for jobs.

Chinese laborers were brought into the US to aid with mining and building of the Trans-Continental Railroad. After completion of the railroad, the Chinese became looking for jobs. To reduce the racism and violence taking place, the Exclusion Act was introduced. This act prevented further immigration and deported those already here.
