Why should you avoid contractions and slang in formal essay?

Because if you would like your essay to be top notch you need to put words that people are not going to think that you are not putting your best work .

The choice of language used in expressing oneself states the level of intelligence and understanding of the speaker with respect to his audience. In a formal situation, the main objective is to present ideas clearly, accurately and effectively.

Formal diction in a job interview or symposium, does not suggest using slang and contractions when expressing ideas. This especially true in literary works such as a thesis and school essays.

Explanation:

There are two types of literary and presentation language: The Formal and Informal diction.

Formal language is used in academic and business writings. The type of audience or situation will determine the type of language to use.

Informal language suggests a causal and spontaneous form of writing. In this case, the audience could be friends or a family member, personal text messages, emails and to a certain extent some less formal business letters.

Formal language and writings requires the use of the following guidelines:

1. Avoid contractions.

2. Avoid using of the pronoun "you" to address readers.

3. Avoid using first-person pronouns.

4. Avoid using slang and colloquial language.

5. Avoid abbreviated words.

6. Avoid popular diction.
