The main cause of the Crimean War was Imperial Russia’s bid to carve out vast territories in the Black Sea peninsula away from the ailing Ottoman empire. On the pretext of protecting Chistian Orthodox interests Russia invaded the Turkish-held European provinces across the Danube River.
The Russian aggression pitted the empire against the British and the French who also have their own interests in the region.
