To represent the number of cans in each shelf you will divide the total number of cans by the number of shelves.
This is represented as
t/4 = n.

The expression would be: T / 4 = N
The worker put an equal number of cans on 4 different shelves. That means he divided the number of cans by 4 to fill the 4 shelves. Just divide T by 4 and you have your answer.
