Why do more earthquakes occur in california than on the east coast?

The tectonic plates are do not move as much!

Because along California is what known as the Cascadia subduction zone, which is a huge rip where to tectonic plates are colliding and one is going under the other steadily at a very slow rate. it builds up pressure then slips and you have earthquakes.
