The soccer team and the lacrosse team sold tubs of cookie dough as a fundraiser. Each tub sold earns $5 in profit. If the soccer team sold 13 less than twice the number of tubs that the lacrosse team sold, and the two teams sold 224 tubs combined, how much money did the soccer team raise?

First we define variables:
x: The soccer team tubs
y: the lacrosse team tubs
We have the following system of equations:
x + y = 224
x = 2y-13
Substituting (2) in (1)
(2y-13) + y = 224
We clear y:
3y = 224 + 13
y = (224 + 13) / (3)
y = 79
x = 2 * (79) -13
x = 145
Answer:
the soccer team raise 145 tubs
