The answer that doesn't fit: Avoiding political power.

Political parties seek political power in order to implement the policies that are in line with their interests. So, the party mobilizes around its interests, and then nominates and supports candidates to run for office to serve those interests on the local, state and national level. In doing so, the party also is providing opposition against other political groups that have differing aims and interests than their own.
