Why part of the spine bends and part of it does not?

The back part of the spine contains the joints called the facets. These facets are the governors of spinal motion. They will allow bending forward, backward and side to side but resist rotation.

The spine bends to reduce and absorb shock when walking, running, jumping, or anything that would put an excessive amount of stress on your spine
