the answer to m will be -16.

How you got it is because you have to isolate the variable. Meaning get it to one side of the equation so it is by itself.

m+4=-12
-4 -4
m=-16
Basically in order for the m to be by itself you have to subtract 4. Now whatever you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other side. I'm guessing you know how to add and subtract negative numbers. Therefore leaving m to be -16.

m+4=12
subtract 4 from both sides
m+4-4 = 12-4
m = 8
