The main result of crossing over is the genetic recombination.

In prophase of the first division of meiosis, paired homologous chromosomes exchange portions of chromatids by performing chiasmas: recombinant chromosomes are obtained.

This phenomenon is the crossing-over that causes intrachromosomal mixing between alleles of homologous pairs.
