The four modes of marriage are called Consumer marriage, Psychological marriage, institutional marriage, and the modern covenant marriage.

These four are actually interconnected with each other. One factor is that they are all modes of the twentieth century. For example, the institutional marriage was the first mode and was said to be based on economic security and is concerned with "family". The psychological and consumer marriage mutated and implies that one's needs are being met. On the other hand, modern covenant marriage requires the habits of the heart. These modes are interconnected with the word "divorce".

Marriage does not only mean happiness. There are so many reasons as to why people marry. Others have the reason of money, power, and etc. When marrying someone it's not just about cupcakes and rainbows, there is also bitterness which we call divorce.
