The histone code is a pattern of amino acid modifications of the histone tails that is thought to specify the transcriptional state of the genes.
Different chemical modifications, like acetylation, methylation, or phosphorylation, are made to residues on the N-terminal tails of histone proteins and those modifications correlate with chromatin structure and gene expression levels.
