Why did the Populism movement take hold

Many farmers in the south were fed up with high-interest rates on loans and expensive shipping costs via railroad companies so they formed a collective party called the Populist party, which would act as a sort-of union when negotiating with banks and railroad companies. They saw mostly success at the local governmental level
