The marriage of Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel was criticized during the campaign because she had been married before. Due to divorce laws not being fair to women or even allowed in most cases, Rachel was still married to her first husband. She was shamed through the election and died a month after the election of her husband. Andrew believed the other party was responsible for her death and held a grudge through his presidency.
