Maize has vertically oriented leaves. would you expect its

mesophyll to be divided into spongy and palisade layers? explain

No these plants will not have mesophyll divided into spongy and palisade layers. Plants with vertical leaves such as maize are able to capture the energy of the sun on both sides of the leaf. This is why you would not expect mesophyll cells to be differentiated into palisade and spongy layers. In addition, the leaves will contain stomata on both surfaces.
