The larger the artery, the more blood flows into it, and the more it has to stretch and recoil as the heart beats. If it wasn't elastic enough, it would burst open and the person would be put in danger. Large arteries receive large amounts of blood with a great amount of pressure so the elastic fibers allow these vessels to expand to help this high pressure, then recoil to their original shape to move the blood along.
