Hurston was reminded that she is a woman of color almost on every occasion in her adult life.
She wasn't spared at all - wherever she went, whatever she did, there was always someone who pointed out to the fact that she was black, as if her skin color defined her. She expanded on these ideas in her works, such as How it Feels to be Colored Me, as well as Their Eyes Were Watching God.
