Solve the problem. Judith works after school at her family's tent company. One of their best selling tents is an A-frame tent that is 4 ft. high and has a rectangular bottom 4ft. wide by 6 ft. long. The sides of the tent are 4.5 ft. long. How much canvas is needed to make the tent? (Hint: determine the surface area)

The surface area of the tent is 94 square feet.

There are 5 pieces to the tent. We just need to find the area of each side and add them together.

Floor - Rectangle: 4 x 6 = 24

Front & Back - Triangles: 4 x 4 / 2 = 8

2 Sides: Rectangles: 4.5 x 6 = 27

24 + 2(8) + 2(27) = 94 square feet
