Manchester was a huge industrial center that manufactured huge amounts of products at the time and they needed a way to ship their goods quickly. They built a rail towards Liverpool because Liverpool is a coast city with a developed harbor which could ship the goods anywhere in the world and the railroad made it possible for both cities to prosper.
