The creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958 was a direct result of the successful launch and orbit of Sputnik I by the USSR in 1957.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an independent agency of the United States Federal Government responsible for the civilian space program, along with aeronautics and aerospace research. It was founded in 1958.
