During the Civil War, the Confederacy placed a great deal of importance on defending New Orleans given its strategic importance and the fact that a great deal of Confederate weapons were stored there.  On the Mississippi River, two forts were established to defend New Orleans.  The city was also surrounded by Confederate gun boats.
