Venice was rich in spices and they trade spices like pepper, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, etc. The Venetians were the only traders to Asia in the early 1400s. But by 1504, Venice was eclipsed by Lisbon as the European conduit for Asian spices. The tension in Venice was also worsen by the conflict in Egypt which only ended in 1517 by its conquest by Turkey. This made entry of the European Ships in the Indian Ocean changed the established trade pattern in South East Asia.
