The deeper into the Earth you go, the greater the pressure and temperature. Lithification is the process in which solid rocks are formed from the over budden pressure of sediments particles. Deep in the Earth, the pressure and the temperature are high and the sediments are compacted and chemically changed. For instance, limestone is a carbonate rock. The solid rock formed at or near the earth surface is called the sedimentary rock.
