Why is it important for an organism to have the correct number of chromosomes

Multicellular organisms require cell division for growth and repair. All of the new cells must have the same number of chromosomes as the original cell.

It can result in mutations or an inability to procreate. For an example, people with down syndrome have one extra chromosome on chromosome 13.
