The agreement that ends the Spanish-American War shows that America was not only motivated to help Cuba because of oppressive Spanish rule. Rather, this document shows that the US wanted to expand their territorial and political power.

The Treaty of Paris (signed December 10,1898) resulted in Spain renouncing their claim to Cuba. Along with this, the Spanish also gave the US the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico. The fact that the US received these territories shows that this war was about much more than just trying to help Cuban citizens get rid of a corrupt Spanish government.
