How does primary and secondary succession change ecosystems? Can you provide an example?

Primary succession happens when you are left with bare rock and an ecosystem has to start completely from the beginning with remaking soil with humus and lichens. Secondary succession is not as bad since there is still soil left over for plans to regrow.
