Juan learned that gear ratio refers to the number of times one gear rotates in relation to another gear. The ratio of the gears in the picture below is 1 1/2 to 1/2 write two unit rates to represent the gear ratio above.

Answer: The two unit rates are 1 to 3 or 3 to 1.

A unit rate is a rate in which one of the rates is equal to 1.

In the case of our rates, we have decimals and not the number one. So we have to convert the fractions.

1.5/0.5 = 15/5 = 1/3

Our fraction simplifies to the unit rate of 1/3 or we can flip it to create 3/1.
