How did Jewish people preserve their cultural and religious traditions in the diaspora?

Even if the Jews moved they still carried their culture and religous traditions with them. The rabbis were still there and all the other people related to tradional stuff.

Whenever they settled, Jews built synagogues. Rabbis led services and interpreted the Torah. Jews continued to follow their religious laws and customs.
