In mexico and the american southwest, retablo painting is a customary way of giving thanks to god when someone escapes from some danger or recovers from an illness. yet, such paintings never depict the scene of salvation or a narrative of the events. in fact, most retablo paintings are nonrepresentational.

That statement is False.
A painting is considered as 'non-representational' only if it does not rely on representation or mimesis to any extent, which make the painting tend to seem abstract. A retablo is usually display the figure of a real-live person, which make that painting is considered as representational.
