In paragraph 20 the moon has gone completely and left the night in complete and total darkness. The loss of the moon saddens the narrator and takes away feelings of happiness and hope. However, when the narrator looks down, she sees "a sprinkle of silvery, sparkling dust." She smiles because the sight of the moon restores in her hope when all around her is "blackness, lifeless and silent".
