The sympathetic nervous system begins the fight or flight response. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for vigorous muscular activity. The sympathetic nervous system increases the runner’s heart rate and blood pressure, inhibits digestion, and stimulates sweating. Once the event is over, the parasympathetic nervous system returns the body back to normal.
