The purpose of such architectural features such as large pointed arches and spires in Medieval European architecture is to make the Cathedrals achieve greater height. These arches and spires emphasizes two things--the higher the arches and spires of the Cathedrals, the closer they are to the heavens and the closer their relationship to God.
