How does deforestation change an ecosystem, and is this change reversible?

When deforestation happens its stripping away habitats which leads to a loss of animals. which might lead to a gain in pray since predator's are becoming no existent in that area (or vis, versa). If the this across near a town animals will try to find shelter and move into towns when they can hide and live.
