At the end of Part 2 in _1984_, after Winston wakes up from a dream crying, we find out that Winston had somewhat believed he had killed his own mother. He also tells that during a time he, his mother, and his sister were hiding from air raids in shelters after his father had left them, he stole some chocolate from his mother and his sister. After that he left them, and he has never seen them again.
