The upper classes benefited most and often embraced colonial rule.

A pattern of response to Western imperialism in South Asia was that the upper classes benefited most and often embraced colonial rule. West Imperialism benefits mostly the upper class because it gave them access to a series of practices that, historically speaking, contribute to maintaining the power by the people that already have money and power., like the free market and such. So, they welcomed the colonial rule.
