According to the Preamble an appropriate role for government is D) Defending the country. The Constitution states that it is being established to "promote the welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." Its important to keep in mind that the word liberty can mean freedom and the word posterity means future generations. Thus the government would have the role of defending the country, its freedom and its future generations.
