Precipitation occurs when a cold front tries to over power a warm front. The cold front pushes the warm air higher in the atmosphere. Since warm air has the ability to hold more moisture, and condenses as it gets pushed up, strong uplifting winds can occur, with a possibility of a thunderstorm.
