So we have 2x + 7y = 4 ---------(1) -4x - 3y = 14 -------(2) Multiplying (1) by 2. 4x + 14y = 8 -----(3) (2) + (3) we have 11y = 22 y = 2 If y = 2 then we substitute y into (2), and so we have: -4x - 3(2) = 14; -4x - 6 = 14; So -4x = 14 + 6 = 20 -4x = 20 and so x = -5 then our answer takes the form (-5,2)
