Why is the battle at vicksburg and gettysburg considered the turning point of the civil war?

Because the British had told the Confederates that if they won either one of those battles,they would lend them support. Since the British never showed up after either one of those battles,it means the south lost any chance of foreign aid from England and subsequently lost the civil war
