In terms of casualties, the Soviet Union lost more soldiers/civilians then any other nation during WWII. Even though the Soviets repelled a German invasion of Eastern Europe, fighting was brutal for both sides as the Germans lost land. Opening a second front in Western Europe by the US and the UK would allow the Soviets to conduct less military pressure, forcing Hitler to fight the war on two sides.
