The autonomic nervous system controls the internal organs of the body which includes the viscera or gut by transporting information towards the Central Nervous System. It is primarily responsible in maintaining homeostasis or the internal environmental balance of the body. It is divided into two divisions the sympathetic and parasympathetic. The parasympathetic is known as the "housekeeping division" and it is characterized by the ganglia located in or near the effector organs.
